On Feb. 27, 21-year-old Helen Kidane was crowned Miss Black Oregon USA 2011, a title secured after competing with 11 other contestants in five categories – personal interview, health and fitness, talent, evening gown, and question and answer.
In addition to her crown, Kidane won scholarships and prizes. She is a graduate of Portland State University with a dual bachelor's in health sciences and community health education. She will now advance on to represent the state in the National Miss Black USA Scholarship 2011 competition in Washington D.C.
The entire night was a blend of glamour, dance, song, spoken word poetry and intellectual engagement.
The runners-up for the competition were, in order, Dyvisha Gordan, 17, of De La Salle High School; Sandrina Powell, 17, of St. Mary's Academy; Raynetta Steward, 21, a graduate of David Douglas; and Lauren Lucas, 17 of Grant High School.
The Miss Black Oregon Competition seeks to encourage the further education and increased community service of their participants.
