In recognition of National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week Nov. 17-23, Share will host their second annual 'Hungry & Homeless in ClarkCounty: Get the Facts' on Tues. Nov. 19, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Vancouver Community Library, Columbia Room. Event is free to attend and open to the public; register on-line at sharevancouver.org.

"Recently, a child in our Backpack Program took his bag of food to his teacher and asked if there was any food that could be cooked in a microwave, because his family is living in a motel and they don't have a stove," shared Becky Parker, Hunger Response Assistant Director. "We reached out to the schools participating in our program to see how many other families were experiencing this same problem. Now we are helping these families by providing recipes to cook meals in the microwave, as well as shelf-stable proteins, can openers and microwave-safe bowls."
The brown-bag lecture event features: Alan Hamilton, Executive Director at Clark County Food Bank and Becky Parker, Hunger Response Assistant Director at Share. Speaking points will focus on the increasing number of food-insecure households in Clark County, in part due to recent reductions to the Supplemental Food Assistance Program (SNAP), as well as ways to help hungry families in our community. Also featured will be a participant from the Clark County SNAP Challenge to share the experience of eating on $4.50 a day.
Share encourages individuals, businesses and organizations to get involved in NHHAW by organizing a drive to collect non-perishable items such as food, toiletries, clothing, blankets, books and toys; or sponsoring a bake sale or car wash and donate collected money to a local shelter; or volunteering for a local non-profit organization. Additional ways to help are available at www.sharevancouver.org.
