Health Coalition Wellness Fair this Saturday

Portland’s African American Health Coalition holds its free 19th Annual Wellness Fair, Oct. 25, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Ambridge Event Center, 1333 NE MLK Blvd.

Bringing together clinics, health organizations, and the community to promote health education in a fun way, the event offers health insurance information, with “navigators” and insurance experts to assist and to pre-register anyone for the national registry.

The 19th Annual Wellness Village, a free family event open to the public and focused on getting the community looking & feeling healthy, includes:

 Health clinics- free dental, hearing/vision, flu shots, immunizations

 Diabetes and high blood pressure screenings

 Fitness classes and free massage - Kids’ activities

The African American Health Coalition works to improve health outcomes in the community through research, advocacy and outreach programs like Healthy Kids insurance coverage and the Low Cost Exercise program.

Portland NAACP Elections this Weekend

The next General Membership Meeting of the local NAACP will be held from Noon until 2 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 25, at Concordia University, 2811 NE Holman St. in the University Library, Room 120.
This will be your opportunity to hear from and to speak to the local NAACP nominees for president, vice president, secretary, assistant secretary, and treasurer.

All Portland NAACP members in good standing are eligible to run for office. You must meet the criteria and ATTEND this meeting in order to run for office. Anyone with questions can contact current NAACP Secretary Doris Muhammad at 503-282-0537.

Voting for NAACP officers is Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Red Cross, 3131 North Vancouver Ave., Conference Room 'C' - First Floor. Voting will begin at 11a.m. and NAACP members will have until 3 p.m. to cast their votes.

Dancing Zombies Take Over the World; Portland Hosts 8th Annual Thrill the World

Thrill the World, where hundreds of locals dress like zombies and dance Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” choreography, is coming up Oct. 25, for the eighth year in a row.

Each year, all proceeds from Thrill the World Portland benefit the Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center (SMYRC), a local organization that provides services and a drop-in center for queer youth.
Dancers will have to learn the dance ahead of time. Practices will be at Fremont UMC, 2620 NE Fremont in Portland (practices are optional; dancers can learn at home with instructional videos on youtube). Practices occur Sundays from 2-4 p.m., and Fridays from 6-8 p.m., through Oct. 25.

A Community Conversation: Services for Seniors And People With Disabilities 

Aging and People with Disabilities would like to invite you to come and share ideas about the future of Oregon's services for seniors and people with disabilities. This is your opportunity to help Oregon decide what should be done to improve future services. There will be a short presentation followed by a group discussion. Refreshments will be provided. Everyone is welcome, and we would love to hear what home and community mean to you--Now and as you age. Meetings will be held:

RACC Seeks Applications for New Public Art Murals

The Regional Arts & Culture Council is now accepting applications for mural funding through its Public Art Murals Program. Applications are due the first Wednesday of every month through June 2015.
Applications and guidelines are available at racc.org/public-art/mural-program. Proposals must be submitted by 5 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month. RACC’s review and approval process takes 4-6 weeks, and all proposals are reviewed by the Public Art Murals Program Committee, whose members include artists, arts advocates and other creative professionals. Latest CCB Sweeps for Unlicensed Contractors

Construction Contractors Board investigators found nearly 60 potential violations of contractor law after recent enforcement sweeps of approximately 400 job sites in the Portland area and the Oregon coast.

Investigators checked job sites at random in September and early October as part of an ongoing campaign targeting unlicensed contractors.
Common violations included:

• People who were building, remodeling and repairing properties without a contractor's license 
• Contractors who failed to provide workers' compensation coverage for their employees
• Contractors who were working on homes built before 1978 but who were not licensed to handle lead-based paint
• In recent months, the agency has conducted similar sweeps of construction sites in other parts of the states.

A typical first-offense penalty for working without a license is $1,000 with subsequent violations resulting in fines of up to $5,000. Working without a license is also a misdemeanor crime. Contractors and consumers can report unlicensed contractors and other illegal activity or verify licenses on the CCB's website or by calling 503-378-4621.

Local Military Support Network Hosts Benefit Concert Featuring Norman Sylvester

Veteran and military support network, OMSN, announces a fundraising concert, dinner, and silent auction to support veterans of every era with targeted resources to sustain their needs. 100 percent of the proceeds go to support Oregon’s Veterans, with benefits ranging from financial assistance, transportation and ensuring basic needs.

The benefit, Voices for Veterans, will feature the Norman Sylvester Band, a down-home BBQ dinner, a no host bar, a silent auction, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.
