The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Portland chapter invites Oregonians to join them for a week of events honoring the memory of Malcolm X. On Saturday May 26th, 2018, the NAACP is hosting “The X-Factor” (Malcolm X Brunch), with his daughter Ilyasah Shabazz as the keynote speaker.
“A lot has happened to our communities in the last year and we truly believe that the power of the civil rights movement and the legacy of Malcolm X are as important now as they were then,” said E. D. Mondaine, President of the NAACP Portland Chapter. Mondaine’s hope is that this will be the kind of event that provokes conversation on establishing unity.
Prior to The X-Factor Brunch, the NAACP Portland will celebrate the birthday of Malcolm X on Saturday, May 19 at 10 a.m. in their new offices at Lloyd Center Mall.
There will also be a night of readings from local spoken word artist Mic Crenshaw, musical performances by Eldon “T” Jones of N-Touch, Norman Sylvester and many more on Wednesday, May 23, in North Portland’s Celebration Tabernacle Church. Admission is free, but it is a fundraiser. Tickets can be reserved online.
