Because the event originates on the east coast where it is 3 hours earlier, organizers say attendees can pair their favorite at-home beverage with this history lesson. All History Happy Hours are free but registration is required for streaming access. Free virtual event to be held Monday, May 11 at 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
How did the creation of the Black citizen affect the political engagement of Black churches? Discover the changes brought about as Black people became leaders in their own churches and learn how these churches created the political success of one of the most famous biracial political coalitions of the post-emancipation era—the Readjuster Movement.
The speaker for this event is Nicole Turner, PhD. Dr. Turner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Virginia Commonwealth University. Nicole Myers Turner’s current research project explores how Virginia’s free and freed people used their churches, conventions and religious educational institutions to define political strategies, gender roles and community membership.
