Black Domain Exhibit Opens June 2

Opening June 2, Black Domain presents photographs by artist Intisar Abioto that examine the lived history of Black place. Through portraits of Black Portlanders in their homes, at work, in creativity, and at worship, the exhibit captures places of architectural, cultural, and historical significance to the city's Black community. 

Now on view:

A portion of the exhibit is open now with a “salon” space in the corner gallery that shares a collection of Abioto’s portraits of individuals who were photographed as part of this project. As a collective space of gathering and exchange, the salon will be a site of programs this summer.

Also on view in the salon is Northeast Voices, a video project with intergenerational members of Portland’s black community about neighborhood history and change that was recorded at Dean’s Beauty Salon and Barber Shop earlier this year. This short video below provides a glimpse into the conversations.

The exhibit is on display at the Architectural Heritage Center, located at 701 SE Grand Avenue in Portland. The galleries are open Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission is a suggested donation.
