Artists Play with Paper, Find Edge, Color, Light

"Edge, Color, Light" is the theme for the gallery show at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center through Aug. 18. An artists tea is planned at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at the center, 5340 N. Interstate Ave. Call 503-823-4322, ext 1 for reservations.
All three presenters in the show differ in their esthetic use of the medium. The show is a journey exploring the nature and limits of paper and its partnership with the artist.
• Edge, presented by paper-making artist and author Helen Hiebert: This journey begins in the outer gallery exploring the nature of hand made paper, its texture, temperance and edge. Handmade, raw fibers are stretched, twisted and torn to highlight paper's naked strengths and weaknesses.
• Color, presented by artist Mark Shelton: Step into the main gallery and be surrounded by an explosion of color. Handmade paper is saturated with color and torn into bright vistas painted with Native American figures.
• Light, presented by Lam and Kestrel of HiiH Gallery: Enter the special inner gallery and pause a while for relaxing and reflecting in a forest of light sculptures. Organic shapes with handmade paper towers and twists into dream like forms.
Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The center is also accessible by MAX; get off at the Killingsworth stop. For information about the exhibit, call the center at 503-823-4322.
