Calendar Spotlight

The Community Coalition for Environmental Justice (CCEJ) will hold its 6th annual conference from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at South Seattle Community College, 6000 16th Ave. S.W.
The theme of this year's conference is "Race, Power, and the Environment: Liberating Our Communities from Toxins."
The day will consist of diverse workshops around indigenous environmental issues, food justice, colonization and its global impacts, toxins careers, violence and neighborhood safety, gentrification, redlining and climate change. Workshops will be drawing speakers from all around the Puget Sound region and will address issues on the urban, rural and indigenous levels.
This year's keynote speaker will be Dr. Joy Leary, author of "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing." The focus of Dr. Leary's talk will be environmental injustice. Following her talk will be several interactive caucuses specifically around youth, environmental justice allies, immigration and economic justice. The conference hopes to engage people with in-depth, dynamic dialogue in order to fashion solutions to the different toxins that exist in our community.
An additional "Accessing Information on the Web" skills workshop will be hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency and CCEJ.
