The second annual "Drum Major" Ecumenical Service honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, and Rosa Parks will be held 3 p.m. Jan. 20 at Vancouver Ave. First Baptist Church.
Five individuals are receiving the "Drum Major" award for important contributions in the spirit of Dr. King, Mrs. King, and Mrs. Parks. This year's recipients are:
• Beth Nance, educator and co-founder of North Portland Bible College;
• Wilma Pitre, long time Sunday school teacher at Vancouver Ave. First Baptist Church;
• Loen and Sho Dozono, organizers of the Flight for Freedom to New York, the Flight of Friendship to Thailand and the Flight of Friendship to New Orleans;
• The Honorable Oregon State Sen. Avel Gordly, a legendary leader in the campaign for civil rights and economic equality.
A free will offering supports the Drum Major Scholarship Program for young people to further their education.
