Willamette Week's Murmurs column reported on a story in The Skanner about a group of business leaders who went to Sen. Margaret Carter and asked her to run for the Portland City Council seat being vacated by Sam Adams – who is running for mayor. In the brief, "Murmurs" suggested that I must be one of those business leaders.
Let me set the record straight. In fact, it was a group of white, city center business leaders who approached Sen. Carter. To quote my news editor "Last time I checked," I was black and in Northeast.
If it had been my idea to ask Sen. Carter to stand, or if I had been part of that group, I would have used my soapbox as publisher to put forward the idea. I would have written an editorial saying Sen. Carter is the kind of seasoned legislator we need in city politics; she should stand for Portland City Council and we should vote her in. I reserve my right to do so.
