Sen. Carter Named to Ways and Means

Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker-designate Dave Hunt announced last week that Sen. Margaret Carter and Rep. Peter Buckley will serve as co-chairs of the Joint Ways and Means Committee in the 75th Oregon Legislative Assembly.
As Co-Chairs, Buckley (D-Ashland) and Carter (D-Portland) will be responsible for leading the work to craft the 2009-2011 biennial budget for the State of Oregon.
Buckley brings to the table the ability to problem-solve creatively and will bring a fresh approach to the process, said Hunt.
Carter's 22 years of service in the House and Senate make her the second most veteran member of the Oregon Legislature.
Carter, was elected to the first of seven consecutive terms in the House in 1984, serving as a House member on the Joint Ways and Means Committee in both the 1995 and 1997 Legislative sessions. She was first elected to the Senate in 2000 and was elected to a third term earlier this month. Carter re-joined the Ways and Means Committee in 2003 and served as Senate Vice Chair of the Committee in the 2005, 2007 and February 2008 sessions.
Also in 2007, the full Senate elected Carter as President Pro Tempore, the second highest ranking office in the Senate.
Salutatorian of her high school class, Carter is a graduate of Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and holds a professional Masters Degree from Oregon State University.
