Portland Office of Human Relations Screens 'Stealing the Light'

Portland's Office of Human Relations is hosting its monthly Human Rights Film and Dialogue event on Wednesday with a screening of "Stealing the Light," a story about Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti's journey to educate children in Afghanistan. Kharoti is the founder and president of Portland's Green Village Schools, which fosters basic education schools in his home country.

The free event lasts from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Office of Human Relations, 5315 N. Vancouver Ave. in Portland. Food and refreshments are provided.

"Produced by Aimie Burns, Stealing the Light is a compelling documentary that captures Dr. Mohammad Khan Kharoti's commitment to educating children in Afghanistan and the journey of this vow.

Dr. Kharoti enrolled in primary school at the age of twelve and became the first in his village to read and write. His life was never the same. 

He is now the founder and president of Green Village Schools, a Portland, Oregon, non-profit which builds schools in Afghanistan by fostering schools that offer children a basic education and empower young people and their communities to become actively engaged in building a future of hope for their country."
