Frederick Nelson Bryant Jr., of Portland, Ore., passed away on Oct. 29, 2013, at the age of 53, after he suffered a stroke.

A new day shelter, just for homeless families, will open Monday Nov. 4 at Highland Christian Center, 7600 NE Glisan, Portland. It's part of a network of family shelters that will make sure every homeless family has a place to sleep and a place to stay warm during the day.

Seven protesters were arrested at the U.S. Post Office on SW Couch Street Tuesday, after an attempt to occupy the building. The protesters, part of the Portland Communities and Postal Workers United  group, oppose cuts to the US Postal Service and outsourcing of union jobs to private corporations.

Students from Rosemary Anderson High School are taking part in the Friends of Trees' Albina Tree Initiative that will plant 140 trees across the three neighborhoods. Neighborhood volunteers and Friends of Trees are set to plant the trees on Feb. 8, 2014.
