Who Was the Real African American Heroine Behind Lois Leveen's Novel?

Author and education expert Lois Leveen will speak at Allen Temple CME Church, May 15, to lead a conversation on Learning From History. Leveen will share what she learned from the real life heroes and heroines who inspired her acclaimed historical novel "The Secrets of Mary Bowser."
The book is based on the true story of an African American woman born into slavery, freed and educated in the North, who returned to the South and became a Union spy in the Confederate White House.
Critics have called Leveen's novel "riveting." "powerful," and "masterfully written". But because it's based on real events, Mary Bowser's exciting life also has a lot to teach us today. In fact, Leveen says what she learned from her research can help us as we work toward creating educational equity for all students. Haven't read the book? No problem. Leveen's talk is designed for everyone to enjoy. Middle and High school students are encouraged to attend, as well as anyone who loves history and a good read.
