Bill Bellamy Talks Comedy and Why He Doesn't 'Make It Rain'

(CNN) -- Bill Bellamy has no problem owning up to the fact that he is "Crazy Sexy Dirty."

"I am actually all of those things," said Bellamy, who titled his Showtime comedy special just that. "I think people have only known the polished side of my career and I wanted to get my grown man on."

Many of you likely remember Bellamy from films like "Any Given Sunday" and "Love Jones" as well as hosting duties on MTV, but the comedian/actor wants the world to know that comedy is still a great love in his life.

With "Crazy Sexy Dirty," which will be released on DVD July 17, Bellamy said he wanted to make the comedy special as personal as possible, and to "write the comedy from that honest place." That included jokes about everything from rapper Lil Wayne's appearance to the practice of throwing wads of cash at strippers in the club, an act known as "making it rain."

"The reason I did that one piece was because it was based on a true story," Bellamy said. "It just baffles my mind that these young guys would throw their money away like that. I don't have that kind of money that I just want to give my money away to people like that."

He may not have the time to do that, anyway. Bellamy's staying busy with a new syndicated series, "Mr. Box Office," coming this fall; a new comedy special titled "The Ladies Night Out"; and also with his Twitter account, where he often cuts up with his followers. But he added that returning to the stage just felt right.

"Comedy is hot again and people want to laugh," Bellamy said. "Comedy has changed a great deal in some areas of what people are allowed to say, though it's gone backwards in terms of people's sensitivities. I've noticed that a lot of comics are having to apologize for being honest about a subject matter. Now everyone is so hypersensitive it's kind of scary."

The comic said he absolutely hopes to be part of the planned "Love Jones" sequel, and is enjoying the fact that fans are rediscovering that he can bring the funny with his stand-up.

"I like that people think I am the silliest person ever," he said.
