It’s a star-studded lineup!
Matthew Cherry is the award-winning director behind “Hair Love,” an animated short that went viral, gaining more than 64 million views on YouTube. Centered around the relationship between Black fathers and their daughters, the short centers on a father learning to do his daughter’s hair for the first time while the mother battles cancer.
The short went on to win an Oscar, and that same year Cherry announced his new “Young Love” series, a spinoff featuring a deeper look into the characters featured in the original animation. Now Cherry has shared a first look at the new animated series, starring Kid Cudi, Issa Rae, Loretta Devine, and Tamar Braxton.
“The series is set in Chicago & follows the Young-Love family, parents Stephen Love & Angela Young, daughter Zuri & their pet cat Rocky as they juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues & multi-generational dynamics while trying to make a better life for themselves,” Cherry tweeted.
Rae has revived her role as mom and while Cherry is still mum on the details of the 12-episode series, he says it is set in Chicago and will touch on a number of social issues. Cherry is set to serve as showrunner alongside Carl Jones (The Boondocks). Monica A. Young of Blue Key Entertainment will serve as executive producer with David Steward II and Carl Reed of Lion Forge Animation. Insecure's Dayna Lynn North will serve as writer/executive producer.
Check out the first look from Cherry below. “Young Love” is set to premiere on Max this fall.
