EMP Museum Celebrates Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, EMPMuseum is partnering with local community organizations to celebrate the wide-ranging achievements of African-American artists, filmmakers, musicians, and authors.

 Featured events include:

FANTASTIC VOYAGE: BLACK PRESENCE IN SCI-FI, FANTASY, AND TECHNOLOGY, Sunday, Feb. 16, 1-3 p.m.

Langston Hughes African American Film Festival and EMP bring you a selection of short films and the animated French feature Kirikou and the Sorceress.  Curated by local filmmaker Zola Mumford. Included with museum admission.  Seating is first-come, first-served.

DJ SPOOKY MULTIMEDIA WORKSHOP   Saturday, Feb. 22, 4 -5:30 p.m.

STG and EMP present a workshop by hip-hop turntablist, composer, and author DJ Spooky, aka Paul D. Miller, focused on his DJ Mixer app, upcoming book, and how technology is revolutionizing music.  Following the event, DJ Spooky will sign copies of his book, The Book of Ice. Tickets $10 ($8 EMP members).

 AN EVENING WITH OCTAVIA’S BROOD  Friday, Feb. 28, 6-10 p.m.

Attend a tribute to Octavia Butler, member of EMP’s Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Enjoy film footage of the prolific sci-fi writer; special tribute performances by Gabriel Teodros and Felicia Loud; an interactive reading presented by Walidah Imarisha and Adrienne Maree Brown, co-editors of Octavia’s Brood – an anthology of science fiction inspired by social justice movements. Music provided by DJ Sassy Black (aka Cat of THEESatisfaction).
