Chescaleigh, the YouTube sensation behind "Sh*t White Girls Say...to Black Girls" will be a featured speaker at the upcoming Gender Studies Symposium at Lewis & Clark. The symposium will take place on March 5-7; all events are free and open to the public.

The 33rd annual Gender Studies Symposium will explore the relationship between where we are and who we are. Our environments--whether the bathroom, internet, workplace, or sidewalk--have profound effects on the lives we lead. How do interactions in these spaces create, support, and/or destabilize larger institutions of power such as prisons, political systems, or nations?

Scholars, students, community leaders, activists, and artists will speak to the theme of "Gender/Power/Space." Keynote speakers include:

* France Winddance Twine, professor, ethnographer, feminist theorist, and critical race theorist--"The Sexual Life of Soldiers: The Circularity of Violence in a Masculine Institution" (3/5, 7 p.m.)

* Christina B. Hanhardt, who studies LGBT activism against violence in the context of broader debates about gentrification, policing, and crime--"No Safe Spaces: Violence and Gentrification in LGBT Activist History" (3/6, 3:30 p.m.)

* Karma R. Chávez, professor in Chicana and Latina Studies--"Queer Migrations and Coalitional Gestures: Toward Radical Third Space Politics" (3/6, 7 p.m.)

* Franchesca Ramsey (aka Chescaleigh), actress, comedian and video blogger seen on MSNBC, ABC, Ebony Magazine, The Daily Mail, and Anderson Cooper--"Your Powerful Online Voice: Using Social Media for Social Change" (3/7, 7 p.m.)

Additional panels will focus on topics including Pussy Riot and feminist protest, healthcare and gender, and safety and sexual violence.

Organized by a committee of students, with support from faculty and staff, the Gender Studies Symposium brings together representatives from academia, activism, and the arts for three days of workshops, roundtable discussions, lectures, film screenings, readings, performances, academic panels, and other intellectual and creative explorations of local, national and global gender issues.
