Memorial Day weekend is the start of summer and dozens of families are on the road. The Skanner News would like to remind you to buckle up and drive safely.
Here’s just a sample of events to enjoy if you plan to stay at home in the Portland or Seattle.
Seattle Memorial Day Events
Weather in Seattle is forecast to be in the mid-60s throughout the weekend. Skies will be cloudy with about 40 percent chance of rain Saturday through Monday.
Five Thousand Flags
Starting at 7 a.m. Monday May 26, volunteers will place 5,000 flags in the veterans section of Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park, 11111 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle. Everyone is welcome to participate. A service and concert honoring Washington’s fallen servicemen starts at 1:30 p.m. followed by a guided tour of the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, where you will learn about the lives of Medal of Honor recipients Free but a $5 donation for flags is requested for the tour.
Benaroya Garden of Remembrance
The Seattle Veterans Museum will hold a wreaths presentation and dedication ceremony to honor three Washington servicemen killed in Afghanistan at 10 a.m. May 26 at 200 University Street, Seattle. For more information call 206-215-4800.
Museum of Flight
The museum offers free admission for all U.S. military and veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26. A special program honoring the military also is scheduled for Monday. The Museum of Flight is located at 9404 E. Marginal Way S., Seattle. Regular admission is $11-$19
Portland Memorial Day Events
Weather in the Portland-metro area is forecast to be partly cloudy, but dry Saturday and Monday, with 30 percent chance of rain on Sunday. Temperatures are predicted to rise to the high 70s on Saturday falling to the low 70s, high 60s on Sunday and Monday.
Willamette National Cemetery will hold its Memorial Day services from 10 a.m., May 26, at 11800 S.E. Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland. A moment of silence will be held at 3 p.m.
Vancouver
Vancouver Military Appreciation Committee will hold its annual ceremony at 11 a.m. May 26 at the Vancouver Barracks on the Fort Vancouver Historic Site. Speakers will include Col. Richard Wedan, Commander for the 142nd Fighter Wing in Portland, and Rep. Jamie Herrera-Beutler.
