Oregon Humanities’ 2018–19 Think & Drink series will feature four provocative conversations on themes of journalism and justice with renowned writers at the Alberta Rose Theatre in Northeast Portland.
The series begins Wednesday, October 24, with Eli Saslow, a Portland-based reporter for the Washington Post and author of the new book Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist.
In Rising Out of Hatred, Saslow tells the story of Derek Black, the son of prominent white supremacist Don Black who became a major figure in the white nationalist movement when he was a teenager. In college, Black was befriended by fellow students whose efforts to expose him to experiences, history, and science that he had previously ignored caused him to question and eventually renounce his racist worldview.
At Think & Drink, Saslow will join Emily Harris, reporter and producer for the Center for Investigative Reporting’s Reveal podcast, for a conversation about the culture that gave rise to white nationalism, how the movement has gained power, and how its hate-driven ideology has entered the mainstream. More information about our guests is available at oregonhumanities.org.
