Miss Black Oregon US Ambassador 2019 Is Taking Action at the More Than Pink Walk

Portland native and Miss Black Oregon US Ambassador 2019, Arya Morman, is More Than Pink and taking action in the fight against breast cancer.

Arya has teamed up with Komen Oregon and SW Washington for their re-imagined Race for the Cure – now the More Than Pink Walk; It’s a time of exciting change and with that comes interactive activities, more resources and recognition for survivors and forever fighters, and 4 new colors to represent the pillars of work Komen focuses on every day – purple for research, green for care, blue for community, and orange for action.

Komen Oregon and SW Washington is proud to have Arya representing the action pillar, which signifies their focus on:

Advocating for more research funding and critical patient protections.
Educating health care providers, policymakers, opinion leaders, and the public about the burden of breast cancer.
Empowering patients and the public with fact-based information and guidance, so they can take control of their breast health.

“I decided to take action because, as a co-survivor, it gives me a unique perspective and I’ve realized, along this journey, that there is more awareness that must be spread to the community,” Arya reflected. “I consider it a personal duty to jump in and help fight for this amazing cause.”

For Arya, her connection to breast cancer stems from a time when her mother and grandmother began fighting the disease in the same year. She is bringing together her experience as a Senior Healthcare consultant, as Miss Black Oregon US Ambassador 2019, and as an advocate for improving African American health disparities to empower as many people as she can to take control of their own breast health.

“Think More Than Pink,” Arya says. “Think orange. Think action. Think the unimaginable can happen, because it can!”

35 new drugs being approved for treatment
40% decline in breast cancer mortality
Over 3.5 million survivors in the U.S.

However, there’s still work to do. This year nearly 42,000 people will lose their lives to breast cancer and we must all jump in to change this number. Komen’s bold goal is to reduce breast cancer deaths by 50% in the US by 2026, and we know the power of advocacy, education, and empowering others in this fight can make it happen!
