Vancouver, Wash. – Evergreen Public Schools and the union that represents its classroom teachers reached an agreement Sunday on a new contract. The 2023-24 school year will begin Monday with a two-hour late start. Members of the Evergreen Education Association will take a ratification vote on the three-year agreement early Monday morning.

“We are excited for the new school year to finally begin,” EPS Superintendent John Boyd said. “We know this work stoppage has been inconvenient and stressful for our families, and the best thing we can do now is come together as a district and give our students the education they deserve. We are determined to do so.”

The 2023-24 school year had been scheduled to start on August 30, but the strike shut down schools for the first seven scheduled school days. Those days will be added to the school calendar so EPS students receive the full 180 instructional days mandated by the state of Washington. Details of the makeup dates will be announced soon.

The EPS Board of Directors will vote to approve the new contract at its next meeting, on Tuesday, September 12.
