Senator James Manning, among other elected officials, will be touring the Western States Carpenters Training Center in Portland on Monday, Oct. 14, 9 a.m., to get a first-hand look at the newly launched B.O.OT.S/Brothers Keeper pre-apprenticeship boot camp. Sen. Manning will be joined by State Labor Commissioner Christina Stephenson and State Treasurer Tobias Read. The center is located at 4222 NE 158th Ave.
The boot camp is a FREE four-week training program introducing basic carpentry skills to individuals with little or no construction experience. The program connects participants with public resource programs and provides a cash stipend and job placement opportunities for program graduates.
Participants include formerly homeless and incarcerated individuals, single parents and people from lower-income brackets looking for an opportunity to secure a successful career in the trades without incurring educational debt. The pilot program in southern Los Angeles saw an 81% job placement rate for graduated participants.
