Driver Sought in Double Cyclist Hit and Run -- But Is He White, Or 'Dark Complected'?

Police are still searching for the driver of a newer model Subaru WRX that struck and injured two bike riders in a hit and run crash near the Oregon Convention Center this morning.
Although the Oregonian quoted a witness describing the driver of the silver car as a young White male, police issued a report saying the suspect was a "dark complected male." It is unclear why there are two different accounts of the suspect's appearance, although many studies have documented the fallibility of memory and eye-witness testimony.
Portland Police Lt. Kelli Sheffer said witnesses will see the same incident differently.
"There were many witnesses to this morning's accident," Sheffer told The Skanner News. "You might consider that someone described as having a light complexion may still be other than Caucasian and someone described as having a dark complexion may be Caucasian."
The first crash occurred near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Multnomah Street, when the Subaru hit the cargo bike being ridden by Jasper Lieber, 47. The Portland Mercury reports that Lieber said the car was revving his engine behind him as he crossed Multnomah Boulevard to get into the left Westbound bike lane. The car clipped the front of the bike as it sped past.
Another car gave chase but was unable to get a plate number because the Subaru had temporary tags in the back window. The vehicle also had a sticker that resembled the "Monster" energy drink logo.
The Subaru then encountered a dead-end street near First Avenue under the I-5 overpass, where he turned around and crashed into female bike rider, who was transported to an area hospital.
The police say there was also some disagreement between witnesses regarding the make and model of the car. Some described it as a Fiat, others as a Subaru WRX. Police say they believe the car was a Subaru. Regardless, the silver car involved in the incident lost a right front fog light, which was left at the scene of the first crash.
