Dr. Jean-Marie Kamatali, a Rwandan native and speaker from the Scholars at Risk Network, will speak during International Education Week, sponsored by Cascadia Community College and the University of Washington Bothell.
The event will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in the North Creek Events Center on the shared campus, 18345 Campus Way N.E. in Bothell.
Kamatali will discuss global human rights issues and other topics. The public is invited to attend this free event. Parking is available on campus for $2.
The presentation is the capstone for a week of activity and is sponsored by Cascadia's International Club, Cascadia student government, Cascadia Activities Board and the University of Washington Bothell Intercultural Club.
Kamatali has a Ph.D. in law and is an internationally recognized speaker. A law professor, he has published articles on ethnic conflict, genocide, women's rights and the international criminal tribunal in both the U.S. and European law journals. Representing the Scholars at Risk Network, Kamatali speaks on behalf of the international network of universities and colleges and responds to attacks on scholars by those who seek to limit access to information and new ideas. Such limits may include the restriction of academic freedom and the repression of research, publication, teaching and learning.
In 2003, Kamatali co-authored a book on the justice system in Rwanda and recently completed a second book on state development in Africa, focusing on Rwanda. He worked as a consultant to international organizations, including the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, the Danish Center for Human Rights and Lux-Development.
