THIS PRESS RELEASE JUST IN FROM THE MAYOR'S OFFICE:
Mayor Hales' Public Safety Policy Director to Leave
Gail Shibley, Chief of Staff for Portland Mayor Charlie Hales, announced today that Baruti Artharee, Policy Director for Public Safety, is retiring from public service. His last day will be Thursday, October 17th, 2013.
Artharee submitted his resignation, saying he is looking forward to his retirement and spoiling his grandchildren.
"It has been an honor and privilege to be on Mayor Hales' team," said Artharee, "and I take pride in the work I have accomplished. I wish everyone there nothing but success!"
In his time as Policy Director, Artharee worked to create more transparent communications within the Portland Police Bureau; prevent youth violence; supported diversity training; and helped build trust within the community between the Police Bureau and its citizens.
"We are sorry to see someone with Baruti's skills and passion for justice leave us," said Mayor Hales. "In his short time here, he has contributed much to my vision of building and improving relationships between the police and the neighborhoods, businesses and citizens."
"We wish him well in his retirement, but will not be surprised to see him continue to be an active voice for justice and equity in our city."
Shibley said the Mayor's office is already actively engaged in finding a successor for Artharee.
