Portland's dance scene gets a dash of European flavor next month when Great Britain's Richard Alston Dance Co. pays a visit to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The company will put on one performance, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the hall, 1037 S.W. Broadway.

Alston is one of the most inspiring and influential figures in British dance. He choreographed his first work in 1968 as one of the original students at the London School of Contemporary Dance, directed Britain's first independent dance company, Strider, and was artistic director of Rambert Dance Co. from 1986 to 1992.

He founded Richard Alston Dance Co. in 1994, and since that time his company has grown into one of Britain's most admired and avidly followed companies. Alston brings his 10 dancers to the Schnitzer stage for the first time with a program highlighting the interplay between his lyrically sculptural vision and complex musicality.

Tickets are available at any Ticketmaster outlet or online from www.whitebird.org.
