Last year, the Furry 5K raised more than $100,000, with more than 2,700 runners and walkers, 1,500 dogs and one courageous cat taking part. Organizers hoped to raise more than $110,000 this year.
"Community support is critical to our efforts to rehabilitate sick and injured animals," says Don Jordan, director of the Seattle Animal Shelter. "As we celebrate our 35th anniversary this year, we are reversing a trend and saving more lives.
Last year the local shelter had more than twice as many adoptions than euthanasias.
Seattle's Help the Animals Fund was established in 1977 to provide critical veterinary care to sick, injured and abused animals.
