New Series of 10 Vanport Documentaries Planned

The Skanner Foundation is continuing to collect and screen new Vanport survivor stories, with plans underway to train producers and screen 10 new documentaries.

A project started in 2011, The Wake of Vanport explores the history of the town of Vanport, Oregon destroyed by a flood in 1948. The project connects the community of Vanport survivors, producers, local artists and audience members.

Two community screenings scheduled in the fall host artists’ tributes to Vanport and post-screening panel discussions.

The Skanner Foundation received funding for the project from the National Endowment of the Arts Artworks program and Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission. Both grants support the continuation of interviewing, producing and screening more stories of Vanport survivors.

This year, The Skanner Foundation partners with Portland Community Media to train producers and create ten new Vanport productions. The productions will become a part of The Wake of Vanport series. Training and production will take place at Portland Community Media beginning May 24 through June 21.
