Chaffey Baseball Club will expand its current offering by opening a program  in the inner-city communities for youth age 13 and 14.
This program will begin with the formation of two Sandy Koufax travel teams — a 13-year-old team and a 14-year-old team. These teams will compete in the summer of 2008 but will have the opportunity to train and develop through the fall, winter and spring of the 2007-2008 school year. By fall 2009, the program will expand to include a program for 15-year-olds.
Chaffey Homes, founder Herb Chaffey and current coaches of Chaffey Baseball's 18-and-under program, Jim Stewart and Ray Atkinson, are leading the effort to expand the program. The program will team up with Bookie Gates and Daniel Jahn, both former players with inner-city leagues and graduates from Garfield and Franklin High Schools, respectively. Gates' experience includes playing select summer baseball for Chaffey Baseball Club, Washington State University and a stint in the Minor Leagues with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. Jahn's experience includes playing select summer baseball for Kirkland McDonald's and Tony Maroni's and being a three-year player and two-year coach at the University of Washington.
The program will hold a workout camp Sunday, Aug. 26 beginning at 9 a.m. at the University of Washington Husky Ballpark. All eligible 11- to 14-year-olds who might be interested in playing competitive baseball and have an interest in continuing to play competitively in high school are encouraged to attend.
Along with the chance to compete with other great players, have great coaches and play against great opponents, participants will have the ability to attend developmental clinics on hitting, pitching, catching and defending. Coaches will also have the opportunity to attend professional development seminars and clinics to improve their ability as instructors. The kids will get a chance to train at an indoor facility in the off-season and hear instruction from a variety of coaches and players.
If you need further information, call Gates at 206-510-6069 or Jahn at 206-854-2526.
