Purchases Help Fund 'Beyond Bars' Program

The Girl Scouts of Columbia River Council are looking to raise money for their Girl Scouts Beyond Bars Program through the help of local shoppers.
The Eileen Fisher store in Bridgeport Village in Tigard is donating 10 percent of proceeds from the sales on Saturday, Sept. 27 from noon to 5 p.m. Shoppers can also get $25 off purchases $25 or more and receive a gift with a purchase.
The Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program helps connect the daughters and other close relatives of female inmates. As more and more women are sentenced to spend time in prison, the number of children who are made technical orphans is increasing.
Statistics show that nearly 70 percent of children with an incarcerated parent will have a run-in with our nation's criminal justice system, which incarcerates more people than any other nation in the world. Having regular contact with their mothers increases the odds that those children will not follow in their mothers' footsteps.

Fritz, Lewis to Debate Oct. 8 For OLMV

Portland City Council candidates Amanda Fritz and Charles Lewis will debate Wednesday, Oct. 8, at a free event organized by the Oregon League of Minority Voters.
The debate begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Carpenter's Union Hall, 2225 N. Lombard St.   The event is open to the public. No tickets are necessary. Doors open at 5 p.m.
The debate will focus on poverty issues that challenge low-income citizens and people of color in Portland.
"Everyone is impacted by poverty, but as a society we must address the peculiar issues of culture, access to resources, and also confront with our compassion, and understanding the systemic challenges that continue to adversely impact communities of color in Portland, and elsewhere," said State Treasurer Randall Edwards, who serves as the league's co-chair with philanthropist Sho Dozono, CEO of Azumano Travel.
The OLMV is a non-profit, non-partisan organization. It was founded in 2007 to advocate for public policies that uniquely impact all people of color throughout Oregon. The OLMV is the first group in the nation that brings people of all colors together to advocate for public policies. It serves as a liaison between communities of color, policy leaders and institutions.

Debate Date Debated
Sen. Barack Obama has rejected Sen. John McCain's request to postpone the first presidential debate, saying that the country needed to hear from the candidates 40 days away from the election.
McCain wanted to go back to Washington to debate the $700 billion bailout bill, which has been discussed most of this week. Debate planners said they are moving forward with plans for the debate.
