Dr. Joe Feagin opens The Bush School's third annual Diversity Speaker Series with "Racism and Privilege: Things My Teacher Did Not Tell Me about U.S. History." Free and open to the public, the talk takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 7-9 p.m. at The Bush School, 3400 E. Harrison St.
Feagin will discuss people and events in U.S. history that are rarely—or never—critically examined in mainstream history books or courses. Topics include the slave-holding activities of former presidents, African Americans who won the Civil War, and Mark Twain's novel Huck Finn.
He is the Ella C. McFadden Professor in Sociology at Texas A&M University. Feagin has written more than fifty books on the topic of race and privilege and served as the president of the American Sociological Association from 1999-2000.
Over the past two years, The Bush School's Diversity Speaker Series has welcomed more than a dozen nationally recognized speakers to engage the Bush community, and the greater Seattle area in conversations about privilege and diversity.
The Bush School is the oldest K-12 school in Seattle. Located in the Madison Valley, Bush enrolls 580 boys and girls in kindergarten through 12th grade.
