Archaeologist to Give Address on Mummies

Links to the ancient past will be the topic next month when University of Hawaii Professor Robert Littman addresses the Portland Society of the Archaeological Institute of America on "The Valley of the Golden Mummies: The Bahariya Oasis, Mummies, Health and Disease in Ancient Egypt."
Littman will discuss his own recent research.
Littman's speech will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7, in Portland State University's Multicultural Center, 1825 S.W. Broadway.
Excavations of a Greco-Roman cemetery in the oasis of Bahariya, 250 miles into the Sahara Desert, began in 1996. Approximately 34 tombs have been excavated from this area, and an estimated 10,000 mummies are present at the site. Littman's illustrated lecture will discuss the site, the role of mummies in Greco-Roman Egypt and the period's life expectancy and health. Littman is part of the Egyptian Mummy Project, which is studying the health and disease of the mummies of Egypt, using CT scans and other methods.
