Author and biographer Evelyn C. White will make two appearances this week during a visit to Seattle. White is biographer of Alice Walker, the author of The Color Purple and the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in fiction.
White's Alice Walker: A Life is the first-ever full-length biography of Walker. The book chronicles and explores Walker's life and influences, from her sharecropping days in Georgia, to the prejudice she and her White Jewish husband encountered in Mississippi, to her rise to prominence, acclaim and controversy. The New York Times Book Review called Alice Walker: A Life "never less than fascinating."
White is herself an accomplished writer and journalist. She is the editor of The Black Woman's Health Book, and her work has appeared in numerous publications including Smithsonian, Essence, Ms., The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.
Though now based in San Francisco and Canada, she has a special affinity for Seattle, where she lived for six years and where she first started publishing professionally. She was among the first group of authors to be contracted to Seattle's pioneering feminist Seal Press, since purchased by Avalon Publishing Group.
White will sign copies of her book at 7:30 p.m. March 9 at Elliott Bay Book Co., 101 S. Main St. She will give an address the following day at the Franklin High School Writer's Program.
