Free Business, Law School Seminars
The Seattle Public Library is hosting free seminars for prospective business school and law school applicants this month at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Room 1, Level 4. The business school seminar will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, July 20. The law school seminar will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 29.
The seminars are free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Central Library garage. Registration is required for the law school seminar. Call 1-800-KAP-TEST or visit www.kaptest.com to register. No registration is required for the business school seminar.
Experts will provide information about admissions factors, advice on developing a strong personal essay and a realistic timeline. The seminars are designed to give attendees an advantage over other business and law school applicants.
The business school seminar is presented in partnership with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions and Alpha Kappa Psi, a business fraternity at the University of Washington. The law school seminar is presented in partnership with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions and Phi Alpha Delta, a law fraternity at the University of Washington.

YMCA Black Achievers Golf Tournament
Tee off with the YMCA on Monday, Aug. 10, to benefit the Meredith Mathews East Madison YMCA's Black Achievers program. This 10th annual golf tournament provides funding for the Black Achievers program, which offers Seattle-area high school students opportunities to explore their career options, develop leadership skills and prepare for college with support from African American professionals in the community. The contest begins with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at Newcastle Golf Course in Newcastle. Register before Friday, July 27, by calling 206-322-6969.
The CREATION Project Selects Four Artists
The Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas selected its 09-10 CREATION Project participants. The CREATION Project is a year-long new works and professional development program created by the CD Forum.
Selected artists will receive $1,000 stipend towards the creation of their new work, participate in seminars and facilitated peer discussions, and will be featured in The CREATION Project Showcase in May, 2010 as a part of the CD Forum's 2009-2010 season.
The artists are: SoulChilde BlueSun (okanomode); Cristina Orbe; Storme Webber; Amontaine Aurore Woods.
A panel of professional artists and managers selected four participants representing a range of artistic performing arts disciplines. The purpose of The CREATION Project is to support the creation of new work for Seattle's African American performing artists in the formative stages of their careers; to use the artistic process as the platform for learning critical professional development skills; and to support distinctive African American artistic voices.
"Black artists, in general, are under-represented in the Seattle area," says CD Forum Program Director, Denee McCloud. "Now in our second round of artists, this program is already known for recognizing the immense talent in our community, as well as giving those artists an opportunity to receive the professional development and support they need."

'Obama on My Mind' Play to Premier Oct.15
The Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center hosts the U.S. premiere of the London smash-hit musical "Obama on My Mind," on Oct. 15, 2009. The show takes a humorous look at the whirlwind and wonderful world behind the scenes of an Obama campaign office in small town America.
A passionate group of larger than life oddball characters start to panic when Sarah Palin enters the race and Obama falls 20 points in the polls. Pop, gospel, jazz, and soft rock come together in a politically inspired comedic romp featuring a motley crew of loyal, obsessive and downright peculiar personalities, striving to get their candidate into the White House.
Conceived by writer/composer Teddy Hayes, a Black American living abroad, this musical premiered in London, England in March.
Director Jacqueline Moscou will further develop the show in London for an England tour and then bring it to Seattle and later tour America. Seattle auditions have begun. Rehearsals start late September 2009.
Hayes is best known as the author of the Harlem-based Devil Barnett series of detective novels. "Obama on My Mind" has some racy material and is recommended for ages 16 and up. Performances will be held at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center at 17th & Yesler in Seattle. Previews are Thursday through Sunday Oct.15-21 at 7:30 pm.
