Andrea Hairston
SEATTLE—Provocative new African American author Andrea Hairston will read from her debut novel, Mindscape, at 7 p.m. April 17 at the University Book Store, 4326 University Way N.E. The event is free and open to the public.
Mindscape is a tale of genetic science, ethnic "throwbacks" and political war zones, set a little more than a century in our future. Reviewers have called Mindscape "exhilarating," "a pleasure" and a "multi-layered … sprawling epic." The book is both an adventure story and a novel of ideas that examines race, violence, community, art and culture through the lens of possibility.
A dancer, poet, playwright and actor as well as an emerging voice in science fiction and a professor at Smith College, Hairston expects to treat the audience to a dramatic and entertaining evening. Like her instructor, Octavia E. Butler, Hairston writes speculative fiction that appeals to a wide, diverse audience.
Hairston is a 1999 graduate of Seattle's Clarion WestWriters Workshop, which willco-sponsor her reading. Clarion West is a nonprofit literacy organization committed to equal opportunity.
