She’s spreading love and education!
Marjorie McCollough-Jackson took an unconventional approach to Valentine's Day by also including facts for Black History Month. On the corner of 4th and Varnum NW is where you can find her front yard filled with pink and red hearts with one huge heart that reads, “Did you know these Black history facts?”
You can learn about Black figures like Jane M. Bolin, the first African-American woman to graduate from Yale Law School and Jan Ernst Matzeliger, the Black inventor that created the first automated shoe-making machine. She even included recent history such as Barack Obama and Ketanji Brown-Jackson.
“I've been getting a lot of thumbs up and 'great job, keep up the good work.’ I even had a school teacher come by who wanted to know if she could bring the students from her school to actually look at the hearts. And I told her 'sure, they're more than welcome,'" McCollough-Jackson told WUSA9.
This is her second year putting on this beautiful display of Black history, and we’re hoping it won’t be her last.
Thank you, Ms. McCollough-Jackson!
